The idea

Mind Scripts

The stories your mind writes without asking you, and why they feel like anxiety.

A Mind Script is the whole scene your mind builds from a single thought, written by an underlying belief and always ending in a way that proves the belief right. It does not feel like a story while it is happening. It feels like anxiety.

A thought happens once. A script is what your mind builds from it. One small trigger, a short silence, a message not replied to, a quiet moment in your best month, and your mind writes the whole scene. Where it is going, what it means, how it ends.

The ending is the tell. A Mind Script is written by a belief, and it always ends in a way that proves the belief right. If the belief is some version of not good enough, the scene finds its way to not good enough every time.

Why it feels like anxiety

While it is running, a Mind Script does not feel like a story you are telling yourself. It feels like anxiety, or dread, or a racing mind you cannot slow down. That is why it is so hard to catch. You are inside the scene, not watching it, so it feels like information about the world rather than something your mind is producing.

The 3am replay is a Mind Script. So is the conversation you have ten times before it happens, the one that always goes badly in your head.

What changes it

You cannot argue your way out of a Mind Script, because the belief writing it will keep producing new ones. When the belief at the centre changes, the scripts lose their author. The same triggers come and the scene no longer writes itself.

Mind Scripts is my own name for this, and it is one of the core ideas in how I explain what is really going on under the surface.
